You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that things are dangerously out of whack.  Very little of what we see makes any sense.  It’s like we’ve reached maximum chaos.  Honestly, if anybody can shed some light on who is actually running the country, I’m all ears.

That said, these United States of America haven’t imploded yet.  America is one of the largest countries on earth; at 330 million souls we are either third or fourth in population.  That also means that we have a federal bureaucracy of approximately three million men and women.  That’s a lot.  A heckuva lot.

I realize that that number includes the Armed Services.  Soldiers, seamen, Marines, airmen and coasties.  We’re not talking about them.  They have assigned duties and have to abide by a strict chain of command.  If I had to guess, there’s very little hot-dogging or freebooting coming  from that sector.  Too much accountability in the uniformed services.

At best, they can drag their heels when it comes to executing an order.  We saw an example of that in September of 2020 when President Trump ordered the immediate withdrawal of all American troops out of Syria.  They saluted their commander-in-chief and then disobeyed him.

In the civilian sector though, things are more loosey-goosey.  These jokers not only execute policy, they make things up as they go along, making life miserable for ordinary citizens.  We saw this all during the Trump Administration, when jokers like Sally Yates, Peter Strzok, and Patrick McCabe ran their own rogue operation at the Department of Justice.  And that was just the tip of the iceberg.

That’s what we mean when we say “the Deep State.”

The first Deep State (derin devlet) was set up by Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish Republic.  He knew he wouldn’t live forever so he set up a permanent bureaucracy which he hoped would enshrine his secular reforms.  He succeeded beyond his wildest dreams:  among all Islamic countries, Turkey has had very little tumult.

You could also call this permanent bureaucracy, the Administrative State if you will.  Presidents come and go but they stay.  Thanks to the Pendleton Act of 1883, it’s darn near impossible to remove them from office, hence their unaccountability.

This wasn’t a problem so much way back then when where the Federal government was miniscule.  But now it’s a different matter.  When Chester A Arthur was President in 1883, there were only half a dozen Cabinet posts.  Now there are fifteen.  Then there were two uniformed services –the Army and the Navy–now there are eight.

So where am I going with this?  Only here:  whereas these bureaucrats made life miserable for the Trump Administration, there’s no guarantee that wouldn’t do the same with his successor.  (Look how quickly they got rid of Biden.)  Nor are they a monolith.  We call the good guys “white hats” and we’ve seen some of them come forward as “whistleblowers.”  In other words, there are many hidden agendas and every now and then, the white hats carry the day.

I’d go so far as to say that we are seeing fissures within the Federal bureaucracy, especially in the Pentagon.  And it’s somewhere within its bowels that the military plans of the neocons are being actively thwarted.

Dare we suggest that there are coteries within the Pentagon that answer to another commander-in-chief?  It sure looks like it.
